Just use the Toyota stuff on your E46 ZF transmission. (We're on the same other forum.)

Form in place gaskets are fine as long as you're careful to apply the gasket evenly and properly. The only risk is doing it wrong by putting a big, fat half inch bead all around the surface then squeezing it out into the trans when you mate the surfaces. On an RWD car like an E46, with the whole trans pan nicely exposed, it should be easy to mate them up. Maybe use a floor jack with a piece of wood to assist.

I believe the part number you mentioned is specifically made for an auto trans.
