If you truly wanted to put a real discussion on the table I think you would seriously consider collaborations or conversations that start at 10 and end somewhere around 20,000.00 or betta US DOLLARS. ESP if your goal is to build an e car with range that impresses fans of 300 hp turbo volvos. From here Im done talking about it because I know it will take at least that to really have something. Does Volvo manufacture scooters? That or an e motorcycle is about all my pockets can handle right now. On the other hand my free contribution to hand wind your motor with the hybrid topology would have been literally thousands in labor.

If you're going to build an e car save yourself all the bull sht and trouble and build it right. You have to do the math its critical or you couldn't even derive the right winding scheme for the better motor. Of course if you are building an e car right you have to most definitely consider the electrical motors losses it and the inverter efficiency as a power system and how you will utilize amperage and voltage in the build. For E this is most critical. Like anything else I wont waste my time with ignorance.

If I wanted to convert a 240 to an electric vehicle and I had a budget of 5k. Whats the best route to get there? What components should I use? Where are they sourced from?

Is this a possible task?

I had thought that lower turn counts were inherently more powerful and efficient. Is that simply because of the higher weight of copper possible in a low turn count wind?

The problem, as you state, appears to be in the ability to "gear down" the low turn count/higher rpm motor to a usable range. Not sure this is workable in a wheel motor.
I only know what I learned a long time ago, from memory. So this is going to be very vague.
In permanent magnet DC motors with roughly the same rotor winding mass, the higher winding count had higher resistance, more efficiency, lower rpm potential.
Fewer thicker windings (low resistance) have higher current, potentially higher rpm and power, and the iron core/armature frame has an effect.
Each variation and application has different brush timing requirements.
I know almost nothing about brushless, except they are AC instead of DC.

I hope you do see that some apologies cant totally be sincere if the individual trolls and stalks you even harder after he makes them :) u see nothing of value has been added with the addition of their presence and silly comments here....Seems like another dollar general rubber room need be created in OT so someone can vent! This is why a contact list becomes necessary to share information with people with know how uninhibited by acts of buffoonery. I'm sure the truly interested visitors, in particular the ones overseas, do not understand or subscribe to the nonsense in the middle of it. In the future I'd really appreciate if you'd remove such post as they take time to address and aren't of any real value to the forum. Id appreciate in at least my threads that post in the performance section remain technical or informative in nature. When you post something strictly to invoke negative emotion in another member that's TROLLING definitively.... I'm not his friend. I really have no respect for people who give half ass apologies simply because the lights are on.... All u have to do is look at his behavior since his quoted apology. A person honestly couldn't be less credible than his apology combined with his currently displayed actions.

Ok. I'll stop poking fun at you. It is apparent you are wholly unused to people busting your chops over the internet and it is causing you great distress.

My apology was sincere. The initial comments in "that thread that shall not be named" were not racist in origin and that is why I apologized when I did. It doesn't mean that in the ensuing week(s) after reading your posts I don't think you're an *******, but the apology was and still is sincere. Btw, that's a reciprocal... you as well are welcome to view me as a flaming ******* because I probably am an *******.... one of my many, many character defects. I'd like to think I'm the same way on the internet and in person. Salty, but never with vinegar.

My contribution to this board is out of friendship for those here. Some of my best friends in the world I've meet on this board, over the internet. My contribution or friendship does not come with a price tag or start at the $10 to $20,000 level.

I'm just not going to cry about it when things don't go my way so much.

Yes, I quoted MikeP. Mike has one of the best wry or dry (not sure which at this moment) senses of humor on the board and I've been humor-lurking for the better part of 17 years reading Mike's posts and chuckling.

Maybe eventually we'll become friends too. Who knows. Maybe we'll meet mid-way and swap parts, or we'll hang out over a beer at the Mountain Meet this fall. But please do know that while I may disagree with you, I'm not your enemy.

Mikep I hope you will clear your last 2 post from this individual as they help explain zero about EV's and fall upon def ears as far as any reconciliation goes. U know No real man makes or accepts the same apology twice...That's crazy :) Therefore these personal soliloquys of his are useless here and definitely belong in off topic. BTW I knew TFI meant thin film ignition but at its heart is obviously is a thin film capacitor making it in essence a rudimentary form of CDI. Heres 1/4 of the million dollars worth of FANUC 7 axis paint robots I maintained for Daimler . Some people talking here haven't a clue about what I know or do. They are not tasked to do things like automate the entire solvent and paint kitchen for an entire manufacturing facility. I am so talking to them about somethings is like having a discussion with my 14 year old daughter. There's really nothing to talk about in certain regards. I doubt they have a clue about rebuilding Sames shaping air heads or zenith positive displacement pumps at 2500 a shot. In one year I replaced over 130,000.00 dollars worth of piss poor pumps from zenith. I doubt he'd know anything about ABB robots or barmag pumps. I doubt he's ever been tasked with creating major improvement in waste recovery and electrostatic paint booth optimization saving a place like Daimler millions in wasted and purged material. none of this is his element... so really there is nothing to discuss with him... hed be terminated immediately by safety personnel for even trying to walk into this paint booth without my personal escort!!! The robots produce 150 plus busses and travel over 10km every 3 days, He hasn't a clue about the coin involved....or what Ive really been responsible for.​

Stalking and trolling wont tell them alot about things like this... He's no competitor because if he was I couldn't even show him all the things I know. In his possession there are no disclosure agreements with Mercedes Benz, Daimler Trucks of North America, or Amazon robotics, so were not even in the same boat as I have one for all 3. Trust me. This is partly why he doesnt understand the value of certain pieces and he based that solely off age of the device. He hasnt a clue about the tru functionality of such analog items and he certainly cannot hold any candles to Bjorn Ohlsen as far as tuning is concerned. You all know this. Clearly there is a lack of understanding when you don't understand the free unit headed towards the trash would support in stock form over 21 lbs of boost and provide knock protection with the addition of being able to trigger things like fuel enrichment or water injection. The more he goes on about it the more perplexing it is if he truly understood how things work. It will go in the car and we will enjoy it as it will help our car go faster and allow us to use more boost. Of course we don't owe anybody anything for their "obsolete trash!" Millennials dont like older analog devices because they are not examined through open source pages.....for team xerox. That's their problem not mine. Any real examination and understanding of Ohlsen's schematics would reveal not much has changed in all that time accept its digital now making it easier to analyze and repair for an open source youngling. An op amp is an op amp then or now. Creating filters with them and understanding how they work is IC's and troubleshooting 101. When people say ignorant things they expose their true depth in a subject matter then feel stupid when you correct them. That is no ones fault but their owen. Open source projects have been around since before 2000 so nothing Is new about this environment of helping people that otherwise haven't a clue. If you rely solely on open source work of others to succeed you're certainly no authority on anything that required that reliance . My first online account was AOL and it was established on an Aptiva computer running windows 3.1 in 1996. The pc and account are still running strong.

I think anything is possible depending on your goals. I cannot really advise you and what to pull from other ev's for your quest. It seems common sense though that if you are able to pull the drive train that you also pull the inverter. That way there is no need to reverse engineer anything. Volts have good inverters in them. The North Carolina museum in Raleigh has a full cutaway version of the entire car so you can view all its pieces. I think a 5000.00 dollar budget puts a limit on what you can really achieve. In all honesty for that type of idea a series wound dc motor stolen from a fork lift is a start. There's a 200 series Volvo that was posted early in the thread that seems to follow such a track. IMHO It is hard to get a good VFD, bldc, or sinus inverter and batteries for a brushless dc or 3 phase induction within that budget. Take a deeper look into the FLUX CAPACITOR build and you will see that the car could not reach the next plateau with out battery sponsorship from a large manufacture. count how many the boat has....then tell me more about a Tesla.... if uve seen Justive league then you saw Batman driving a Mercedes E car. One of the finest in the world. Be aware that the US does not import all the wonderful EV upstarts that are being created in Europe. Some of the LARGER companies are using the smaller firms tech. You never get to see the little guys that do alot of the work.

So are you a manufacturing engineer, a high level maintenance tech, or a automotive engineer? I know you aren?t all 3, so you need to quit thinking you can pull that lie off.
 
Actually I have been all three. And am degreed in it, Thank you. I think the lie pullers are the people that always post off topic nonsense and dont have any idea what they are talking about.
