b230f valve cover studs

I swapped cams and when I was retightening the valve cover 2 of the 10 studs sheared off so I went ahead and bought a full replacement. Taking them out shouldn't be that hard, I assume I can just use channel locks or vice grips and twist them out. How do I go about threading the new ones back in? Do I have to find two nuts and tighten both of them on and use that or can I tighten the cap nut on and use that to tighten the stud? Lastly, does anyone know the torque spec for the studs?
 
You'll want to use 2x nuts and "double nut" the stud in. Don't smash it it, just run it in until the threads bottom out.
Torque spec is probably ~6 lb-ft

When you swap a cam there is a chance that your valve clearance adjustments wouldn't be in spec anymore. The valve clearances on a B230f is adjusted using shims (the metal discs that sit over the valves). Too big or too small and your engine will be noisy, the valve duration and lift will be off, and if it is bad enough you will prematurely wear down the cam.

You should check the valve clearances with a feeler gauge before buttoning everything up. If one is out of spec you can either get a rental kit of shims from IPD or do some math to determine what shims you need by measuring the existing ones with some calipers.

Sometimes you get lucky and you don't have to touch the shims when moving between OEM cams. You should still check them though.

If the cam is in the car check the valve clearances with a feeler gauge. The procedure should be described in either the Volvo green books or the Haynes manual.

Even if the base circle on the cam is the exact same on every lobe between the M and the H there is no guarantee that the clearances were correctly adjusted in the first place.

im working on getting them, im just a 16 yr old working on my first car. i assumed i could get by with watching youtube videos to learn

Youtube videos only get you so far. A manual specific to your model car is essential for information about that model in particular.

In general the hierarchy of Volvo 240 manuals is as follows

1. Volvo Service Manuals (Green books)
2. The Bentley Manual (not the car company, the publisher of the books)
3. Haynes Manual (often frustrating and vague)

You can find the green books in pdf form scattered about the internet. There were once sites that hosted them but those went down due to legal issues, or so I am told.
 
One of the nice things about the parts catalogs is that you get to see how assemblies fit together. You can see how a strut is put together or how the wheel bearing parts assemble, for example. I recommend a print copy of the wiring diagram green book for your year car. You can find them on ebay. Having the factory diagram book is a big help in understanding what is working in circuits like the power windows. Usually about 25$ or so.
