Had my wife's Bertone in a shop to finish a few loose ends. Turns out the junkyard 5.0 has low compression. Not the end of the world. Got some thinking to do. Fix the JY engine? Get a crate engine? Go LS? Due to my lack of energy probably need to go the path of least resistance. Not sure yet what that is.
Oh and it caught fire and is deemed a total loss by our insurance (7K agreed value)
If it wasn't for bad luck..... I wouldn't have no luck at all. What a crappy last few years.
Ah well Nanci wants it fixed. So if the buyback is reasonable that's what we will do?
Have my concerns about unseen fire damage, wiring specifically.

Did the windshield suffer damage? I think once you pull the engine you will find the wiring not so bad. Your going to have to change it out for what ever new engine you choose. If you don't have the green book on wire diagrams there is one on ebay right now for a 79 , same thing, for about $35 obo. Unless it's warped the hood can be soda blasted back to bare metal, no sand blasting. The door trim is tricky but you have two choices. Redo the car with no trim or use a 1/4 panel trim from a later car to make new door trim. I would fix it but I also have a Bertone jones.
Then there is this.

Windshield looks ok. Estimate came in at $9K.
We already bought it back but may pull the plug on fixing it. My head is spinning.
Have to give it a day or two. Ugh.

You might hit up Larry at Rainbow. I know he had a 262C a while back. May still have the trim sticks and possibly a passenger door. Alternatively, black the trim out on the scraper seals and window/windshield frames, then install 242 Turbo (or the thinner GT) trim sticks.

Again, I do have the rocker moulding in my garage.

Do you know what caused the fire? Was it the wiring you mentioned?

No it was the Ford fuel line connection under the intake plenum. The keeper failed or wasn't connected (likely) properly. Was pumping fuel to the engine and pouring onto the ground at the same time. Lucky it didn't happen while driving or in the shop.

Excellent! Thank you John! I will let you know how it goes.

Looks like a perfect opportunity to build yourself a Microsquirt harness and a 5.0 rebuild kit from Summit :-D

Yeah, it will be a LOT easier to keep that 5.HO in there. The LS platform has some advantages, but not really enough to outweigh the simplicity of fixing the issues that setup has vs. a big swap project.

Estimate shows new door shell. With part# like its available that way.

More power, better fuel economy. Don't try repairing a crispy harness; not worth the headache.

Worth checking into, thanks! I says repair and mean replace. I hated the Converse crap anyway. Still unsure about fixing but having guilt about bailing on someone else project.
(Mrs.) to be clear its always been my project while being her car.
Back to turning wheels in my head. Fix or don't?
.
I will update
