Mike Jr's Sick A$$ 164 project

D-Jet ECU vs Microsquirt

I'm doing another project, a '69 VW 1600TLe Fastback, in which I'm also replacing the D-jet with megasquirt. Should be such an improvement! Cool project.

So I'm thinking about turning this thing into a 164 wagon, or a 165. They've been done before and I happen to have a 240 wagon that I'm having a hard time getting a tag for.

Here's the 240

The 164 looks better than it actually is. It need basically every panel replaced as well as lots of structural components

The 245 isn't bad and I got it super cheap. The body is solid, and it would be perfect for this build.

Here's some examples to 165s that have been build. The green one is 1 of 1 that Volvo built

Here is one mid body work. Gives you some idea of whats involved.

Tentative build layout could be:
White paint all around

164/140 door trim panels in red
164 front seats 240 back seat recovered in red leather
Red carpet

173099923.jpg

164 dash with GT gauge set up
173099937.jpg

Early doors with vent windows and early exterior handles. Roll up windows and factory
Early 245/145 taillights
Early 245/145 liftgate
Accessory 145 roof rack
*this car has all that
173099960.jpg

145 Quarter glasses with pop out windows
173099971.jpg

Drivetrain:
Full 240 coilover suspension
Work Equip 05 wheels
24v whiteblock Engine, Turbo'd
Manual trans T5 or Tremec TKX

Thoughts?

I like the idea
Note on 145 rear pop out windows. The drip rails curve down and last time I checked I wasn?t able to find replacement gaskets for them windows. It been on a back burner for years to add those to one of my 245s. Never dove into the gaskets

There was a thread on here where some guy made gaskets but none of the images worked so who knows if it was done right

Yeah that part might not happen. Depends on what I can find at that point

Cool idea! However, it?s a shame to use such a nice 240 wagon for that build. It looks really pretty. I?d buy it if I could. I live in Sweden....

You would save yourself tons of work if you just get a 140 body to build on. Everything is already there, taillights, doors, bumpers and brackets, iar vents, trim around windows etc.

I?d build a 162

:)

The first green one you posted was not built by Volvo, it was built by an independent body shop called "Yngve Nilssons Karosserifabrik". I have the book that is written about the restoration :) Volvo never built 165?s although a few was put together by Volvo in Australia but that was never an official release.

I wanna say last time I discussed doing a 165 someone mentioned the front wheel arches are several inches further forward? If true what is your plan to address that?

If only you lived on this side of the county, I'd say pull this front end instead of your car apart. Although with the NOS bits you have maybe both will survive

That?s correct! The front end is longer to host the 6-cylinder B30. You could shorten the 164 front, which is a lot of work. Or you could transplant the whole front clip including suspension etc. I don?t think it?s a straight swap on a 240. It would be less difficult on a 140.

Honestly the fab work wouldn't be that crazy and could be less work than a full blown resto on the 164.

For now I'm on the fence about it. I still like it as a sedan too

My 164 was missing the grill slash and the emblem. So no one knew what it was. MB was the usual guess.

I think if you did the front clip swap for a 240 to 164 front you would want to use a 75 164. That way the front clip is designed to fit a 240 body.

I'm about 99% sure that's not the case? Extra wheelbase between the rear of the fender and the wheels on the 164, the 140/240/260 is all (very close) to being the same. And even the '75 164 fenders mount 'horizontally' on the inner fenders, the 240's are 'vertical'.

Well the swap would have to include the inner fenders of course and The body part that is the same is the firewall. But Mike is the bodyman so if it strikes his fancy to do the swap I'm sure he will have it all fit.

You might have missed post #54 up there /\ /\ /\
