has anybody every ran ran or fabbed an up pipe off of a 90plus turbo manifold. Why? to install a bigger turbo. Dont know what biggest turbo that fit in 240 but I doubt a holeset would fit. Just curious and if you did, how did it work out. Im assuming it wouldnt be a stright up 90 that it would have a curve to it so it can mount towards the front. Just brain storming. Thanks

Yes, have done it years ago, works fine, gives you a spot for an external gate too. Older, wiser me would do a J-pipe off the NA header or build something from scratch with better results probably.

i know the OP posted in regards to the 90+ turbo manifold but ive been looking into this on the NA side and have these 2 images to share for those interested about up-pipes/j-pipes:

yelp, Ive been down the NA Jpipe deal. In fact I had everything to build with Evo X. I got the Jpipe fab and had someone else weld it. But could not come up with a solid way to do the downpipe. After it sat for about a yr. I got frustrated and sold it all for cheap. Which I regret, I now have a mig welder, its a flux core. Like to upgrade, I hate my welds at this time but they are holding up on current downpipe. Back on the up pipe on 90 manifold, I think I saw a nice one made by Viking fab. They were over the pond but I can seem to find the link anymore. Anybody? I know used to be a facebook page.

so, like to do the up pipe off of the 90 manifold. I have the flanges, would a ex. pipe be good enough to support the weight and withstand the heat. If so I can mock it up and have local pipe shop weld it up for me.

You’re going to want something stronger than just thin exhaust pipe.
You can get thick cast elbows for pretty cheap now.
Those and a brace would be your best bet.

kinda what I thought. So, Im looking for a T3 to T3 90degree elbow with ext. wastegate mount on it. I did search and only found w.o. wastegate. Guess someone could weld a wg mount on it. Anyways thanks for the info.

ah yes, sam's up pipe. I copied it when I did mine for the 16v in the 940, worked really well (was a real pain the ass tho for the evo8 turbos we chose to use). his turned out a hell of a lot nicer looking than mine

now that looks great. Big question, was all the fabbing worth it? Curious ET's or dyno?

Whether it's worth it depends on your ultimate goals... You can still make power with the 90+ turbo manifold and a turbo in the stock location... bolt a big ol turbo on, give it lots of boost and port the hell out of the wastegate hole in a feeble attempt to prevent boost spiking and later boost creep....

The j-pipe just lets you bolt on the turbo of your choosing without having to shoehorn it in between the engine and strut tower. I also like the j-pipe because it allows my to easily install external wastegates... which in my extremely limited turbo experience, allow rock solid boost control.

They're also super easy to make... no complicated long tube turbo manifolds, etc.

The j-pipe isn't without its own issues... for one it's a pretty serious moment arm and needs to be significantly braced. Second, it's prone to leaking where the downpipe flange meets the NA manifold... especially if you are using the original downpipe flange as the basis of your jpipe... it's almost better to make a new one out of 1/2 steel to give it more meat for the gasket to seal.

Third... Fitting the dump pipe and oil return can be challenging... when I 'designed' my kludge pipe,(I don't want to denigrate people that actually design things for a living by saying I designed anything... I hacked that **** together) I had to make some custom tools to get at very specific bolts because of the clearance issue between the dump, the firewall, the strut tower, the external wastegate, and the engine.

or if you can cobble... you can do this...

never got it on the dyno (didn't have easy access to one), but low 12's, full weight 940 turbo wagon (but cloth interior and no sunroof, so the lightweight wagon lol)

spooled up pretty fast (ignore tps, wasn't hooked up)

on the all seasons it turned in a 12.3 @ 112mph and on the slicks it turned in a 12.1 @ 112mph

street tire passes. getting the 60' down consistent was always a challenge with them lol

it was a lot of fun

stock stall aw71, the transmission itself had some extra things I'd done to it, but it would still blast through the c2 clutches about ever 3-4 months (or sooner depending on how often I drove it). it got pulled and replaced with the 5.3 turbo, which now waits for me to get free time. may stop taking dyno appointments in july-until, I have a lot of stuff I want to do to my cars and around the property that keeps getting bumped, and I'm getting bored with working on cam-swapped beat up ls stuff that has more issues than a ______________ from a ___________ lol.

I built this up pipe not for a bigger turbo, but that a turbo would fit at all.

It?s not very pretty, but is robust and works.

Hi,

how much boost did you run on the 16G6? 9.8 or 10.5 exh housing?

I think the most I could beat out of it was 32 in the mid range and it would taper to 25 up top, this was all on E-85. I believe it was the bigger turbine housing.

I would say that the evo turbo was worth all the work. Low 12s on the street is respectable in my book. I still have some of my stuff laying around, I might get it all out and come up with a setup. I have a welder now so that helps. The downpipe looks to be the headache. I might set it up on my sons car, he be pumped up for that mod. Im still going to come up with an up pipe for my 90 manifold, found a guy from over the pond viking fab. he makes them and they look super nice.

Just let it self clearance the strut tower and be done with it
