![]() hi!
1989 volvo 240. last week, my car sorta sputter to life when i turned it over. until eventually there was no life. i deduced it’s was the intank fuel pump. i did the fuse jumper test and couldn’t hear it so i replaced it tonight. I go to start the car and it just cranks, and cranks, and cranks, but doesn’t turn over.. I can hear both pumps working, and i hadnt had any other issues, so what am i missing? I checked the FP relay and it clicks just fine, tried with MAF unplugged, no luck, checked fuses(even the engine bay one), they are fine. Really a bit frustrated and would like to solve this. Please help! |

![]() Have you checked for spark, to ensure the ignition system is working?
I check with a timing light: if it flashes like it should while cranking then it's almost certainly a fuel issue. Is fuel reaching the fuel injectors? |

![]() I believe that you can disconnect the fuel hose nearest the fuel rail to see if there's fuel getting there. Definitely check spark.

![]() Step one on an unknown no-start is a squirt of starter fluid.
Starts: ignition good Then chase fuel. There have been numerous reported cases of new lift pumps being wired backward.

![]() UPDATE: Possibly just air in the fuel lines as I was able to get him to turn over after about 15 tries and have been driving ok since then.

Glad you got it figured out, normally priming the pump a dozen times or jumping the fuses for a bit helps avoid excessive cranking after changing the pump |
