anyone wanna sell a m40 or m41... I promise this time I will make sure that all the gear oil doesn't in 15 miles.

M40s aren't all that hard to find. They usually need some sort of work though. An M41 is the tricky one.

I've got an M40 in pieces I still need to find a layshaft for.

You can't just swap the transmission. You need the pedals, shifter, (wiring, etc., if OD trans), clutch parts, flywheel, driveshaft, etc....

Just get a used BW35, or drop yours & take it to a trans shop to rebuild.

Park is purely mechanical linkage lock, so something is up mechanically if it won't lock, besides all the lack of gear engagement issues. The shift linkage has a number of pivot points & bushings, so you want to try using the lever on the trans to engage park, instead of the shift lever, to confirm if the Park engagement is an external linkage issue or internal.

As suggested, you need at the very least the Haynes manual, and preferably the Volvo Greenbook, you can look at all the pretty pictures & photos that show how the trans & shift work & are connected (along with all the other systems you will be fixing as you go along).

I have both the the manuals and I compared them to the linkage in my car. it all seems to be there but I will check again for sure. The bushings did look a little bit old on the linkage. Can I get those on Vp? I'm not going to just pull my transmission without being really sure that its what I want to do.

Also as far as a m40. I have a lot of those parts that I took from a different Volvo. I have been thinking about doing this for a while already. I love manual transmissions a lot.

There are a few different bushings for the automatic shifter but the most common one to fail is the ball socket bushing. Volvo never sold the bushing separately, you had to buy it with the linkage which is no longer available. We found a source for the bushings and sell them to the other suppliers who then mark them up.

ok Will that bushing fit most the linkage parts in the shift linkage?

I pulled the transmission pan this evening. Lets do a little test to see how learned you are

Question 1.
Why was the BW35 transmission bone dry after a 15 Mile drive.
A. A magic Fairy stole it all
B. The transmission donated it to the a blood donor
C. The transmission dipped its cookies in it.
D. The bolts holding on the transmission pan were finger tight

Question 2.
What doesn't belong in a transmission pan.
A. Transmission fluid
B. Small amounts of clutch material
C. Small amounts of metal
D. A random unidentified spring

Extra credit.
HOW THE HECK DID A RANDOM SPRING GET INTO THE TRANSMISSION PAN?

do you have a transmission pan gasket?

Yes. Planetman (my brother) will PM you about the bushings and gasket.

Yes it does. It's what engages the parking pawl.

His trans should be an air cooled BW35. He can use it if he wants to install a cooler and lines.

had to completely rebuild the brake system, the carburetors were shot, the ignition system made no spark at all ect. Continuing on with the rebuild with good faith that it would run and drive well someday.
That's impressive learning for a 15-yr-old. Not to mention healthy resilience and optimism. Good signs.

In addition to the other manuals mentioned, I highly recommend Auto Mechanics Fundamentals by Stockel and Stockel. It's a yearly release, so used copies are cheap. Diagrams and explanations to your heart's content -- wish I'd known about it as a teenager. Any 1960s or 70s edition (~500 pages) will work for your car, but if you find a later one (e.g. 1990, ~600 pg) it has additional chapters to cover fuel injection and various types of sensors and what they all do and how and why. After you finish reading the automatic transmission chapter, you'll be ahead of many of us.

Sadly, Amazon changed their policies regarding books with multiple editions: they no longer allow a vendor to specify which used edition they're selling. I've had good luck asking the vendor directly.
