Just got done replacing my fuel pump, fuel filter, intank filter sock and the hose connecting the intank pump to the pick-up on my 760 turbo. Took about 2.5 hours start to finish. No special tools needed. Found a pinhole in the pre-pump hose and a very clogged sock filter (it was completely collapsed).
I highly reccomend checking your in-tank pump setup. I have yet to buy a volvo that didn't need its sock filter changed. Car idles smoother, quieter and hopefully will run a bit better.

ack, my main and intank aren't loud and work, but at 160K, I seriously doubt that the tank has ever been opened. Did your pumps get quieter? I have been putting off a sock/pickup cleaning for a while, but I should really do it. My whole wagon is probably going to smell like a gas station for a while afterewards too...
how many miles do you have, and how bad does it usually get ~160K?
