Trying to decide on a new turbo and looking for some help with turbine wheels/housings. Going to pick between 8cm or 10cm housings for either 49/56mm wheel or a 55/65mm wheel.

Don’t want to choke out the engine at high RPM but still want to spool as its a daily.
2.3 ipd cam 8v with a 90+ manifold, currently 2.5 inch exhaust but Ill go up in size if people get triggered by small numbers like that.

Don’t mention holsets I already asked if I could steal the turbo off my brothers grain truck he said no

On a side note if no one says otherwise i'm buying a td06-20g friday and will put the "tiny mitsubitchi" idea to the test

They change as I decide to throw more money at it. I'm more looking for advise on spool characteristics from anyone who has tried a variation of these wheels/ housings. No specific goal, no specific plans. Sorry if that's not really helpful.

Currently I have a td04hl with a 7cm conical housing, I can feel the exhaust bottleknecking at higher RPM, cant tell where exactly as my dash lights don't work and you can't really hit redline in the day time in town

twin scroll and dual wastegate. That should allow less chance of exhaust getting choked out, while allowing some flexibility to go smaller turbine.... look at the turbo's turbine map to give you a better idea of what flow the turbine is able to deal with, and do some maths. I found that there is a couple different calculators out there for this. Borg Warner has matchbot, and I think garret has one for their stuff as well. Its pretty useful for understanding A/R changes, turbine sizing changes, and % of wastegate usage as well as wastegate sizing.

oh, yeah, paging Duder... Duder you are needed in this thread, please report to this thread. k thx bye.

I'm not seeing anything here I can help with explicitly. OP asked for "spool characteristics from anyone who has tried a variation of these wheels/ housings" so I'll sit this one out for now.

Some BW turbos are internal WG and dual scroll. Which really simplifies the packaging.

I had one on my 16V turbo.

Right, I'm eyeballing the EFR 7163/58mm .80 AR twinscroll with the EWG setup for my B20... looks like it should be good a pretty wide power band and coming in low in the revs.

get the bigger housing. you're not talking about huge housings anyway, so get the bigger one.

Well I missed all of this helpful information while pretending to study for finals this week. I'll be getting the td06 tonight and giving it a try. Would have been great if I had noticed your responses but I guess I'll have to find out the expensive way.

If I don't end up liking the Turbo my brother wants it for his m20 someday anyways so it wont be a loss to try

As a side note its a used "rebuilt" turbo so I don't get much choice outside of just buying a different one, but its a good deal so I'll give it a shot

It ended up being a 8cm housing, 55/65mm wheel, I'll run it and see if getting the 10cm housing worth getting. Not sure how ide measure that but with some tips i'll do any tests yall want

20g has a horrible hot side. The WG dump has to make a right turn coming out, unless you've building your own setup? It's really a temporary/transitional turbo, as you won't be happy long term. Really old design also. Chokes with the 10 housing, can't imagine how bad it will be with an 8. My experience is with it on the whiteblock though. Maybe it's better on the 4 cyl.

So far it's quite fun, I only have it at 17psi but it pulls much harder then the 16t I had. I'll have to make a downpipe and throw a muffler on it before I can test during the day since as of now it's running a MR2 downpipe flipped upside down without a hood. Very fun fireballs but it rattled 3/4 of the mounting nuts off the turbo so no more running it tonight
