Cleaning engine bay paint with white spirit?

I saw a post on facebook where a guy cleaned up his engine bay to shiny using a petroleum-based white spirit.

Besides removing oil that might be anti-rust, are there any downsides to this on the clearcoat?
 
Use Simple Green and soaking time. You don't want petroleum based fluid all over the place. You will have to clean it off later anyway with something like Simple Green.
