Hi!

Does anybody have a real life photo with reverse metal pul rod in early M46 J Type Overdrive shifter?
My M46 shifter is missing original rod and I am about to find out which one of two different types of rods is needed. As far as I know there were 2 metal rods and later there was plastic rod.

Thanks.

Regards

Without the old one to measure that's going to be tough. Can you post some pics of the shifter you have? It might help to determine which pull rod you need.

Didn't you say that your OD switch was changed from the slide switch to the push button? I'm beginning to wonder if the chrome outer handle with the later shift knob was swapped onto the early inner handle. There may not be an easy way of connecting the reverse pull rod with that mashup of parts.

I looked through my shifter parts and I don't have an early shifter that I can take apart to show you. Here's an exploded view of the early shift handle. #17 is a special socket head screw that's been drilled and tapped through the side of the threads for the pull rod. The one in your pic looks like the wrong bolt.

So, can I swap entire later shifter in that early socket to have everything go smooth?

My initial plan was to buy or to make myself this special socket head screw and buy the pull rod and evetything should work ok. Why not? That is why I need to know the proper length for this early shifter.

Thanks

After doing a little research digging through a box of shifter parts it looks like you have the original chrome handle. From what I can tell you have the alternate 1 shifter and the only pull rod available for that shifter is 172mm long. The special socket head screw is still available but expensive for what it is.

Unfortunately Volvo changed the size of the pivot ball so the late shifter handle can't be used in an early cage.

Look what I've found. And now I'm confused even more. There is another pull rod...

Yes, the flat metal pull rod was introduced in '79 when the shifter cage changed. It doesn't work with the early shifters and is no longer available. It was updated to the plastic pull rod style.

so what are my option to have good shifter working?

I think you can make it work with a new pull rod and a new special socket head screw. Sometimes the plastic collar breaks where the pull rod goes into it so you may need a new one of those as well.

The 172mm pull rod that's available for alternate 1 type shifters is part number 381566.
The special socket head screw is part number 1232819.
The plastic collar is part number 381510. If you need the little set screw it's part number 915505.

All 4 parts are still available from Volvo.

Thanks for details.

What if I will just leave the old style socket ball and buy later M46 shifter and replace it?

If you're talking about swapping a later chrome handle onto your early stub, it won't work. The early stub is hollow and the reverse pull rod goes through the center. The later stub is solid with one side machined flat where the pull rod runs.

I mean replace everything, not just chrome handle. I already have swaped chrome handle (the tube) and the knob, but everything else is left from 1978. What is to take lets say 80's M46 complete shifter set and place it in my 1978 shifter socket?

The pivot ball is larger on the later shifter and the plastic bushings for the pivot ball from the late shifter won't fit the early cage.

You'd have to weld a later socket on the early rod / wire cage.

Do you mean something like this?

BTW, the ball sockets of early M46 and later M46 are different in inner diameters, so you cant't put later shifter to early socket. The ball socket bushings are also different.
