Raising engine 10mm

Hello,

Recently i bought a full set of early type engine 740 engine mounts that use rubber inserts rather than oil filled. Now after doing some measurements i've found Land rover engine mounts are almost exactly the same dimensionally. Which is handy as poly inserts can be had for quite cheap over here in UK.

The landrover mounts, have a slightly larger(5mm) OD than the volvo rubber inserts, so i will make up a washer to go either side of the mount to spread load a little. The landrover mount is also 4mm taller and with 2x2mm washers either side the engine will be raised around 8mm maximum of 10mm.

These are the poly inserts

Will this cause any problems? Only thing i can think of is the gearbox may end up being at an angle slightly which could cause some misalignment with the driveshaft.

Any info would be great.

Thanks,

Lee

People drive for ridiculous periods of time with the mounts collapsed and the oil pan on the subframe, so whats a centimeter in the other direction gonna do really? Plus I have no clue what that unit of measure actually is in relation to say, a cubit, which is what I use as my standard.

^^given the state that most of the motor mounts are in on these cars and still running I don't image 10mm making any difference.

Also, find a large diameter washer to go on either side of the poly engine mount. Volvo uses them on the stock ones, they are just permanently bonded into the rubber. If you just bolt the poly mounts to the Volvo mounts, they'll probably pull out the studs or tear the mounts over time.

That won't do anything to change the fact that poly is a poor choice for motor mounts due to the fact that it's impossible to bond anything to it.

Very true!
I think the mounts above are designed with a washer inside the poly to get around the issue that the RSI mounts suffered from. You can visible see a nut at the surface, and there is a slight circular edge lurking below the surface (just slightly more than 1/2 way between the nut and the outer edge).
My guess is they just ran a bolt+large washer+nut together and then poured the polyurethane around them. This gets around the polyurethane bonding issue.

Fwiw. I use motor mounts from b230s for the mount on my m46. It's like a 1/4" thicker(~6mm). It raises the trans just slightly and the feel is more responsive. I've been doing this as long as I've been volvoing.

I fitted these mounts last week, work a treat.

Never ended up using washers so engine is only up another 4mm...

Horrible job fitting the mount underneath the turbo with PAS, everything was so awkward to get to with the old mounts as they are so big.

Lee.

I bought a pair of these (colour as in the original photo) as I was I the middle of a plusT on my 240 and I had taken off the old mounts anyway. One side fit perfectly. On the other side where the threaded bar sticking out is offset, I drilled the centre holes larger in both mounts and they seem to fit fine. Car is not back on it's wheels yet but I have started the engine & it is a big improvement.

That solid mount looks shorter than the stock one.
The early b23ft cars had solid mounts but different brackets.
They pop up here from time to time.

I made these, they do vibrate a bit, they cannot be broken. ( bolt goes straight through.) You tighten the bolt tight and back off a quarter to half turn. Works great so far!
