going to be looking at a turbo diesel 744 later this week, supposidly rebuilt in the last 50k miles, what and how should I be inspecting?

That aint random, that is changing the timing belt wrong, or not at all 99.8% of the time. Even many times the shop does it wrong, so maint records may not mean much.The engine is good when running, but even with the good maintenance sh!t can happen.
It suffers from 6th cylinder bad cooling so the compression check can tell a lot.
The image is of a friends 760 D24 TIC 88. The timing belt was changed recently and the car made over a 1000miles when this happened. So I am not sure about the wrong settings here.
