1977 Volvo 242 project-Ford 302 swap

Sounds good, that motor looks at home in there. Every time I see a 5.0 on craigslist or Marketplace I go hmmmmm?

I had to pull the transmission back out. I took a chance on this used T5, and it didn?t quite work out. It won?t fully engage first and second gears. Inside looks great, just need to figure out why it won?t go into those gears. At least I?ll learn how to work on a T5.

Disassembled the transmission and found a few problems. The 1-2 slider had significant wear causing binding in 1st and 2nd gears. 1st wouldn?t even engage. This caused broken shift fork pads. The gears, bearings, and synchros look great, but I?ve ordered a rebuild kit anyway while it?s out and on the bench.

I rebuilt the T5 transmission, and it works great. I?ve put about 20 miles on the car now with just a couple minor issues. I hope to have those solved this week and put some more test miles on the car. So far, I?m really loving it. Drives great, handles amazing, and the brakes are insane. :)

I guess I?m calling this project 242 complete. It took me 1.5 years from the day I bought it for $1000 in Florida, to the first drive with a Ford 302. I?m really loving this car. From the V8 power, the BNE and STS parts, and the Brembo brakes, this car is an absolute blast to drive. While the original plan was for a b6304 white block, the 302 was the right choice for me. All it really needs now is a good wash, clay bar, and buff.
