Does the distributor have to be removed or can the sensor be replaced with it in the car as the Bentley manual shows?

It depends on which distributor you have. If it's this one then you might be able to get the screws out and remove the sensor but you'll probably need to rotate the distributor to get access to all of them.
If it's this one then the distributor definitely needs to come out so the shaft can be removed.

The second style usually needs a new socket, which is a separate part, same as the 700 distributor 1346793

1346793 might work but the parts catalog calls for a 1389492 and it's a little cheaper.

I don't see that circlip you're supposed to remove.

Distributor out. That wasn't fun. Needed a slide hammer with the hook attachment to remove it. Now to get that pin out of the gear. No joy yet.

Use two screwdrivers under the trigger vane to remove it. One under each side and pry gently. Use lots of penetrating oil and give it time to work.

An hour of pounding and cursing got that pin out finally. I can reuse the pin but is a new replacement readily available? Same for the o-ring on the body?

The pin is NLA. The o-ring is the same part as the breather box o-ring, 949659.

Sorry, I thought you had the first type where the vane is held with that small pin. Glad you got the drift pin for the drive gear out.

Was able to reuse the old one and added some Loctite. Will pick up the o ring locally.
