Volvo 940 power steering pump question.

There is a spring and metal insert on the pump. How do they go in? Spring first towards to pump or metal cap first? Asking for a friend... I don't have a b230 lying around to give him an answer.

^^^ Thanks, that explains the mystery spring and plunger that I found in a box of free craigslist parts, along with the main PS pump body.
