Matcha: The Green 245

My wording there wasn't the best.

I mean I gotta set idle RPM, timing is already set and good. It just runs so much better you can't tell when it's too low anymore.

My timing light has an RPM function and the car doesn't have a Tach

Or I could install my Tach

If I started flooring it at 1pm it would probably read about the same until late afternoon.

Got AW71 swap parts today, along with rear hatch gasket, rearview mirror and sun visors that arnt just powder filled bags. Hopefully next weekend I'll get a 4th gear

Also gave the car a wash Friday, a lot of the green is coming back, going to start polishing and waxing soon

Way back when our 1980 DL was a young puppy, the best I could coax out of it was a 22 second 0-60 time. (4spd no OD; no idea of the gearing.) I'll be curious to see what you can do with your wagon.

Nice job diagnosing and cleaning out the fuel system... those K-jet systems work remarkably well when new, and are remarkably expensive when not.

I'm both impressed and a little envious of your working space. I've done a wee bit of stuff in a shop with a lift, but mostly I've spent decades wriggling around on my back. That tends to dampen the enthusiasm somewhat.

The car feel pretty peppy for what it is, I'll pretend the B cam makes it a racecar.

Working on cars at the shop is such an awesome privilege, using a lift and other shop tools makes everything a breeze, but I've gotten too used to it, bench pressing transmissions is 20x worce now that I've seen how easy it can be. Other issue is I can't have stuff torn apart when 8am rolls around, so it's either little stuff after work or get it all done over a weekend.

Seats have been a mess since I got the car, tired of sitting on a towel and still getting foam on my ass

<a href="https://ibb.co/str05m7"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/Pt87Tmk/PXL-20210531-160342060.jpg" alt="PXL-20210531-160342060" border="0"></a>

Picked up some early brown tweed seats a while back from the Oakland PnP, not the correct vinyl for a wagon but MUCH better

<a href="https://ibb.co/YLg4dL4"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/87knx7n/PXL-20210531-161522888.jpg" alt="PXL-20210531-161522888" border="0"></a>

A little sun faded so she dyed the fabric brown again, took a few coats but it matches the rest of the interior nicely

Also got in a rear view mirror and some "new" visors (nice foam, not bags of powder)

<a href="https://ibb.co/bJc3SNH"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/zJq5yP8/PXL-20210531-224338873-MP.jpg" alt="PXL-20210531-224338873-MP" border="0"></a>

And a "new" hatch seal, plus cleaned and polished the rear cargo area trim (not pictured, but trust me it's sexy)

Cool. It looks like it turned out pretty well. Seats look good.

BW55 out, AW71 in, hello bearable highway cruising

Old transmission was in good shape, clean fluid and nice and shiny inside, but no overdrive was a deal breaker for anything more then around town

<a href="https://ibb.co/FnqJ3V8"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/QXjnQdY/PXL-20210605-180617351.jpg" alt="PXL-20210605-180617351" border="0"></a>

Swapped the tailshaft housing, spedo drive gear and kickdown cable, tossed in a new filter while the pan was off. Would have done the tailshaft bushing if I remembered to order one, but this bushing looks pretty nice compared to the ones I've done.

Also found why the starter sometimes made a racket, gonna have to pay close attention so it doesn't eat into the "new" ring gear like this.

Kickdown cable needs more adjustment but fits much better then the (broken anyways) 760 cable would have.

Had the car at work yesterday, undid some of the ****ery the PO pulled

Last in the Kjet pressure trifecta is rest pressure, sometimes I had a hard warm start issue, hoping to cure that before it takes up DD duty for her
<a href="https://ibb.co/J3Szq9J"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/Y0VtXxs/PXL-20210626-203026249.jpg" alt="PXL-20210626-203026249" border="0"></a>

With the fuel line clamped it takes roughly 30 minutes to drop, without it's between 1-15. Going to retest later with the line removed but I'm still suspecting it needs an accumulator. Also slipped large hose around the fuel pump as an isolator to quite it down

<a href="https://ibb.co/s5ZM9KP"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/5YPfhr9/PXL-20210626-202817777.jpg" alt="PXL-20210626-202817777" border="0"></a>

With the rear panel out I cleaned up the trim a little, some got polished but the hinge just got wire wheeled, no more crustiness

Today is back to the paint, wash, wash with comet, wetsand, polish. Just got the hood so far but it's night and day

I really forgot how much different the 70s 240 is from 80s, same car yes but totally different feel inside and out

That paint is turning out nice! My gosh, how I love single-stage enamel. It can really come back to life with gentle persuasion.

Been pondering your earlier statement for months... if your verbal poetry is up to the challenge, what's different about the oldest 240 cars? My longer-term experiences include 1978, 80, 82, 84, and they all felt about the same to me (when stock and driven on normal city/highway roads.) Notwithstanding minor differences between the DL/GL luxury levels, and the NA/Turbo hp levels, of course. But in every case, no matter how plebian the trim level, the car felt nice, solid, well-built. A joy to drive. It's no wonder so many million were sold.

I am really impressed with the paint aswell, if you look at the begining of the thread the car looked almost white when I first towed it home. There are some spots that have worn through under the sun, but even they shine after some work. Hope to get the rest of the passenger side done tonight

If you mean this statement:
I really forgot how much different the 70s 240 is from 80s, same car yes but totally different feel inside and out

My thought is that the updates over the years changed the look at feel of the cars. Sitting in an early 240 feels more spacious, with smaller seats, a less pronounced dashboard, vinyl map pockets, slimmer interior door handles and shifter. The rear tail lights and hatch handle are sleeker, along with the lack of upper and lower outer door trim, the flathood and simpler single round headlights.

I would like to thank the Volvos at the museum event for lighting a fire under my ass, awesome to see so many hunks of Swedish iron in one place for the first time in too long. Davis 2022 prep has to start sometime right?

Matcha has been sitting since the day after the last bump, unloved and slowly being covered in bird **** and treesap since before classes picked up.

Sunday she fired right up and drove home, Monday morning she passed smog, first try since 2008, flying colors for the oldest 240s you still have to emissions test :grrr:
<a href="https://ibb.co/Lhhcr7h"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/S77McC7/PXL-20211018-161104711.jpg" alt="PXL-20211018-161104711" border="0"></a>

Quick trip to the DMV, aided by an actually very nice and helpful DMV employee who enformed me it was on non opp and did'nt own the $800 in back fees I was expecting to pay, all my 7 of my 240s now have tags.

And of course the Monday morning shenanigans wouldn't be complete if she didn't make the drive up to Chico

While I obviously have a lot of cosmetic work to do before I worry about it I'm interested to hear opinions on moving forward. Do I powdercoat (thanks in advance junkman) the stock wheels and aim for 100% oem? Or do I slap on the rare parts I've been blowing my tuition, rent and food money on for the last 2 years and finally see what half of my income has been going to in action?

Matcha has been hauling me and the tools around for the past few days, today she visited my other (other, other, other, other, other, other (its not a problem)) project car

Cool! Any updates?

None really, car sat in the apartment complex parking lot for the 5 weeks I've been on break
<a href="https://ibb.co/LzS9S72"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/C5BVBGT/PXL-20220124-230211276-MP.jpg" alt="PXL-20220124-230211276-MP" border="0"></a>

Fired right up when I got back, nice PS leak, hopefully crush washers. Bonus that no one smashed any windows or hit it

During break I got distracted by another 245,
