First off, sorry for the typo in the title!

The Wagon Ovlov : 1988 ***245**

Hey Turbobricks,
I'm Kaleb and this is my newly acquired 1988 Volvo 245 dl.

Back story.

I've been a fan on bricks for quite some time now, but haven't thought about actually buying one until recently when my girlfriend and I were on a hunch to get something to try to roadtrip in.

I've been seeing this car parked at a neighbor's house for a while. It stopped showing up 6 months ago and I was really bummed. I told my lady I was going to ask about it the next time I saw it. A few weeks later it was back, but no one was home... I got some paper and a marker and slipped a note under the wiper that said "Want to sell? (804) ***-****"

I got a call the next morning, and they weren't planning on selling it, but if the price was right they would think about it. I told them I was going to look at 244 later in the week for $850 and she said that's around the price that she was thinking.

Later on that evening we went to look at it. It was really dirty and a little rough around the edges, LEAKY, and just needed some TLC. But it ran strong and I thought it was well worth the ~$800.

After chatting with the owner for a while, he said he'd give it to me for $500. I WAS STOKED. He said he recently replaced the timing belt and one of the front seals (I forgot which one). He also gave me a Volvo crankshaft seal. The leaking was pretty bad, as you'll see in the photos. He said he put in 4 QUARTS OF OIL A WEEK!!!!! :omg:

It did well on the ~20 minute ride home. Minus the brake pedal going to the floor and bluish smoke after letting off of the gas then blipping the throttle. ANY INFO ON THIS??

As for plans, I want to make it reliable, freshen it up a bit, and keep the 254k odometer ticking. (still works)

Here are some photos!

Looking good! I recommend using Forever Black on the bumpers and all the lower door trim. It looks so much better than the ashy gray. I also painted the rocker panels and front spoiler to match the steel wheels. I just sprayed over the underseal on the rockers after scrubbing with Simple Green.

This was my '88 245 (now sold).

Love that photo of the dog looking from inside the car window! Nice job on the restoration.
So did cleaning the oil separator and flame trap solve all that oil mess?

Threw on a new caliper. the last one was oozing with brake fluid. the barrel of the wheel had a thick layer of gunk caked on.

Started to get the bay cleaned up some. It still has a long way to go.

The old exhuast was definitely holy and held on with a shoestring, so it had to go. After a few mins of riding in it you'd be high from exhaust fumes.

Got this old fart can from a friend, and with no rear muffler it was a little loud and raspy for my taste, so I threw this on. Free = good.
It looks pretty obnoxious, and I don't know how I feel about it. I have to say I think it sounds really good. Not loud anymore and no more leaks!
Opinions?
Any one have extra tail lights? as you can see I'm in need. P.o tape job

Thought I'd update this a bit.
replaced the non existent shift linkage bushings

The car wouldn't go into overdrive and it was driving me nuts.
The wire insulation was crumbly, so I fixed that and made it neat again. Still didn't work...

Relay was fine, so I decided to do the block off plate then I found this helpful article

https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/TransmissionAuto.html

Made a channel between the two holes, and it works flawlessly. (not my photo)

Got some new struts. old ones were non existant.
Untitled by Kaleb Bolton, on Flickr

I've never had so many problems with such a simple task. The strut was stuck in the top hat and WOULD NOT budge. Soaked it in rust penetrate for the night to no avail.
ended up with this contraption and wackin it with all my might with a 8 pound sledge hammer for a while and finally got them loose. Then of course the threads were all messed up.....

Nice job on cleaning up this car. Before and after pics are quite dramatic.

Also, those 15" Style 32s look better than I would have imagined on a 240. I have a spare set kicking around that I might consider using now; thanks!

Checking off thing nicely. Good Work! looks great so far.

Thanks guys!
Although it is a night and day difference from when I got it to now, there is still A TON that I'd like to do.
The photos make it look a little better then when you are 5 feet away. :-D Typical 80s silver paint cracking...

I really enjoy the wheels on here. They could definitely be spaced another 25mm.

This seems to be less of a build and more of a "watch me as I maintain my car".

Soft lines weren't happy.

The parking brake was just for show.

Replace and adjusted.

I'm not sure why this wasn't the first thing I cleaned when I got the car. This gunk was caked on super thick.

Any one want to help me out on this?
One green wire coming from the fire wall, 2 green wires from the AC Dryer, 1 black Coming from the compressor. I believe these all correlate. Green to Green from firewall where it looks like the connector came apart, and the other green to the frayed black from the compressor?

Nice job cleaning it up. Keep us updated on the Estonian strut inserts. I have yet to hear lasting impressions about them.

Will do. I'm not really expecting them to last long, but first impressions are good ANYTHING was better than the previous struts. First impressions are good though!

Nice work, those wheels look good!

Looks a lot like the 86 I just got for $300 down to the rust and dirty blue interior, except mine's still closer to the condition you got yours in

Sweet ride! Looks like a college 240 used to haul people to festivals. Nice to see the clean car underneath!
