Default My holy 240

Hi, First post and struggling in more ways than one (and thats just trying to post with pics)
So I've started to try and fix up this, it's like pandoras box...
my question is how can i fix the inside of the body panel on the side of the footwells. It appears water has been pouring in over the years and rotted the sides out. I have taken off the fender but the hole(s) are hidden behind them...Do I make access by cutting a hole in the side and possible redirect the water flow to straight down through the wheel arch or fix the panel up? What was the reason for their design like this? It does seem strange to have rivers flowing along the sides of your car! Can I tape up the vents? I saw a picture of someone who had done this! quite funny but I'm sure they're there to keep things cool etc...
Any help would be greatly received, there should be lots more posts to come if I can get my head round it.
