Found a good low-K motor. Going to refresh it and see about swapping it to at least get him mobile. Then maybe he can rebuild his dead motor lol

Thanks for the guidance, guys. Too bad about all those machine shops closing up, as he found out yesterday after calling them up.

I can understand why automotive machine shops are drying up.

I had a '04 TDI engine apart this spring, it needed new mains.

Pretty much every fastener inside the engine is a stretch bolt, good for a single use only.

The bill just for parts to tear down and then reassemble the engine was shocking. I would
have been better off buying a really nice donor car and crushing it.

On the other hand, this modern engine has piston oil squirters, and at ~380,000km
showed negligible bore wear. This is not just the squirters, todays synthetic oils are
really good.

Modern cars have a dash light for oil level, not just pressure. You don't need to check it.

So, modern engines tend to run fine right up until some idiot drifts the car over a
raised median and tears out the bottom of the oil pan. Or until the car itself is so old and
crappy it gets crushed and replaced.

I always appreciate the input and knowledge of those who post in this thread. Sadly, imho the art of home car repair is dying. But I think that has been said for many years.

Now that the weather is getting a little better, who is up for a get together?
We could do the 19th or 26th this month. Meet at a park or beach somewhere with a big parking lot in the city?

Just a thought.

I had him call Ed Schram's for guidance, but they don't do rebuilds. He's looking to beef it up and "build back better" and all that. Any folks have leads for us? Thanks!
Iíd check out Scandia Motors by Maple Ridge. Been going there to fix up my 88 740 gle for a couple of years and itís been a great experience.

They don't get into that, they told us. It's all good, found a junkyard motor and just about done putting that in now (literally at this moment). Thanks, though!

I made an emergency trip down two weeks ago.

I spotted a really clean 85+ 244 turning left (north) onto Clark Rd from como Lake road. Looked lowered on Virgos. Clean from a distance.

Sure was nice to see 240s on the road again.

I'll be back out in August fully vaccinated and up for visits.

I wonder what happened to my blue wagon. The guy is older so not connected much online from what I understand.

One day, we'll get back into RWD wagons!

Early liftgate? Like 1986+ but not the flush one? Yeah E-codes, but I had CSA Stars on them, kinda like Aussie Geminis.

[QUOTE=+Kardboard+;6195225]I wonder what happened to my blue wagon. The guy is older so not connected much online from what I understand.

That would be mine - it's alive and well, and continuing to be resto-modded.

I drove it for a while, it's now in a friend's carport in Vancouver, slowly getting cherried up. I welded up a new exhaust first thing, added a modded eggcrate 740T grille in a 240 frame, now doing a total clean-up, with POR15 on the few bits of rust. Near and medium future involves uncracking the dash, wood trim, Corbeau seats, electric windows and fan. Far future involves a V-15 cam in a modified head and a K-jet intake manifold. All fun!

It's in too close quarters to take pictures, when I get it more finished I'll do a project thread.

Much thanks, AJ, I have been really appreciating your excellent work on this car.

CSA Stars are getting refinished - the center discs have fresh white paint, will get clear-coat tomorrow, then start on the wheels themselves.

It's place of rest has a driveway in the back at least 4 cars long, with the end recessed into the ground under a deck with picnic table and umbrella. When I first drove up, the lady in charge of the house said "Ooh! It's pretty! I like it!!" I was glad she had that attitude rather than just seeing an automotive hulk in her backyard.

So far, three people have tried to buy it from her, fortunately without success.

Here's a weird question; Stan (Naomi's '78 244) needs brakes. It's got solid front rotors and Girling rear calipers. I want to change to vented front rotors which need wider Girling non-abs calipers, and I need to update to ATE rear calipers as Girling pads are unavailable. Before I drop for refurb brake calipers, anybody got a set collecting dust on a shelf?

Thanks,

M.

Thanks,

M.

I could have sworn I had at least rear calipers leftover from my 90 245 parts car but I've just gone through all my parts bins/shelves and can't seem to find them.
Somebody probably as a set I would imagine.

Good luck

Unless they're lying, and they actually don't have any.

Hi Mark,
I'm pretty sure I've got some calipers in the crawlspace.
I know I also have an old set of pads I got from someone
else's cleanout years ago, there might be Girling rears.
Mind, any calipers I find should be considered cores. I
wouldn't trust the rubber parts, they were old already
when they went in there 5-10 years ago.

I'll see if I can wade in there in the next few days.

Cleaning all that junk out is a project that is becoming
somewhat urgent, maybe I should host a sausage party
later this summer? Got my second dose on Tuesday.

Erie Vo-Vo. I find their ebay store easier to navigate than their website. Great customer service if you call.
