Question bolt on turbo swap for a b200ft

Okay so i read a lot on this forum and never posted anything so here it goes: my 940 turbo (175 000km/110 000 miles) was running great and pushing 0.8 bar with a manual boost controller. one day lots of smoke came and i thought it blew the head gasket as i had overheated several time because of a coolant leak. i did the job and it changed nothing, brand new everything on the head and still lots of smoke, especially when i coast or gear down so now i'm looking at my turbo its a 13c and it has maybe 0.4/0.5mm of play in it so i'm pretty sure that its toast. so, i would like to know two things:
1: i am 99/100 sure its the turbo because i cleaned my pcv, i'v got a new head gasket and my cylinders werent worn but a turbo is expensive so is there anything that i'm missing ?
2: i really want to put in a bigger turbo because i don't wanna spend the money on one that is going to be the same. what is the biggest turbo that will bolt on directly ? and if i need to do modification to the downpipe is it hard ? i really just want a bigger turbo without hastle because i just did a head gasket job for nothing and i'm kinda upset. thank you !

Just an FYI when you suspect something as big a job as a head gasket. You check it with a compression tester to see if that is the problem. A compression tester is a cheap easy to use tool and will give you the information you need to know of your engines condition.

There are many, many turbos that bolt on. If you want something without hassle then the best thing is the stock turbo. If you want something a bit better but not too hard to do you can use a turbo from the fwd cars like a 15g. Once it is reclocked for rwd. It is a straight forward installation.
1982 242 turbo. 338k miles. MVP coilovers and 3" exhaust. Flowed 405 with a V15. Cossie turbine housing with upgraded compressor housing. 90+, IPD remote oil filter. Some other goodness, too. Been lots of fun over 25 years. Restored in 2k. Now ready for a 2nd restoration.

1993 245 Classic, 435k miles, enem V15. IPD bars and chassis braces. Simons sport exhaust from Scandix. sbabbs ezk chip. Been a good road warrior. Genuine Volvo rebuilt leaky M47.
