Default Caping a mechanical speedo

Hello I am planning to swap in a m46 to my 91 245 auto. The manual transmission has a spot that I assume a speedometer cable once attached.

I believe I have to plug this spot since my car uses an electronic speedometer. Does anyone know the threading or what would make a good cap. I imagine I only have to cap the lower fitting that is pictured with the threads. Should I remove that stem? How does that come out?

Do you have an old speedo cable?

No that did not come along with the various swap parts I collected.

You can buy a plug to replace the speedo drive gear.

Another option is to replace the tail housing with one that hasn't been machined for a speedo drive but that would require disassembling the OD. I have one if you're interested in going that route.

I've used the speedometer end fitting as a cap with a round bit of rubber inner tube & a slightly filed down dime as a plug.

Of course you need to pull the carrier and remove the drive gear first.

I would imagine you should be able to find an M18x1.5mm end cap to thread on there.

My local dealer will apparently sell me that cap for $13, so I’ll probably go that way. Does anyone know if I have to pull the housing to use it.

No, you just need to remove the speedo gear and it's carrier.

You should get a new o-ring for the plug. It's part #380757. Reuse the screw and retaining washer.

Edit: the plug comes with a new o-ring.
