It's a combination of a skinny tire, and gearing that is too tall for the torque curve of the engine. You either bog or spin the tires through 45 mph with very little in between.

On yes, you have it right. I fully condone Gary's heckling. But 16V Volvos are like a Honda with no V-TEC. There was a reason the cars came with a lower first gear in the transmission and 4.10s in the rear axle.

It's quite awful actually. I currently have 2 cars to drive side by side. My 16V turbo wagon, and an 8v turbo wagon with a 16T turbo. In some circles they might call that a "big" turbo. The 8v Volvo leaves stop lights like a normal car, and makes decent boost in first gear. The 16V car really needs a push to get across the intersection, and then you need to hold on for the jump to light speed.

It seems a bit hazardous to start spraying nitrous at 1700rpm in the staging lights holding the brakes and throttle wide open, but really it's the only thing I have seen that can overcome the complete lack of torque below 4000rpm.

And one more thing. The effective altitude at the track on Wednesday was 7200' above sea level. That really creates a lag problem

I've been able to stage my wagon down to a 2.0, with a little more on the table if they prepped the track down here. For reference, I can leave at around 5-6psi on warmed slicks here and I end up spinning thru the lights. PIR, I was launching at 9 on street tires and it hooked from the box.

Both drag strips that I used to go to in NJ are closed and done. No east coast numbers from anyone in NJ.

Edit:OK it does look like there are days where ATCO is open. But all the major events are canceled.

Interesting Gsellstr. Your wagon gets down!

I just looked back at a couple past EvW threads and there are alot of sub 2.0 60' times from cars running in the 12s and 13s. I might need to find a bigger N2O jet.

Doesn't seem like they prep PIR anymore. I get more off the line traction on the street...

RogerDee might have the time to hit the dragstrip before it closes for winter. He waited forever to get a set of head studs for his LS.

For me it'll be next spring if all goes well.

What did you register for? Did you go drag racing? Post your timeslip in this thread if you have one.

Good luck gents. Can we hope to see some sweet LS powered single digit time slips maybe?

I haven't been interested in it that long, I want to go to cool competitions in real life, and all I've seen before is records. I've never raced myself. In fact, I'm a sucker for it. But I'm trying to figure it out.) I have a question, do the drag racer use electrical cars? And not too long ago I found some interesting accessories, adapters for all sorts of chargers. Do you use them? Just curious. I'm talking about things like https://evadept.com/best-extension-cord-for-ev-charger/. Very curious...

The drag strip closes mid October in Denver Colorado. I wanted to squeeze in one more night before things shut down for winter. I really wanted a 12 second timeslip after being so close last month. And so I turned the boost up to an even 20psi and I did a little bit of tuning on the fuel and spark maps to make sure the power increased with the new higher boost. The motor seemed really happy, hopefully the AW71 would take it. I also made sure the nitrous bottle was filled and ready for spooling the turbo on the starting line. I'm still running about 35-40hp shot from the wet kit. The car leaves with some authority on the bottle. Much better than my 3 second 60' times without nitrous.

And SuperFridge did not let me down.
Best pass was a 12.33 @ 114mph

It was super busy at the track last night. All 8 lanes full with about 30 cars each. I waited 2 hours to get my first pass done. The pressure was on. With a couple more practice runs I'm sure I could cut a better 60'. I accidentally pushed through the start lights while trying to power brake the car both times. Something to work on next season. Could I even run an 11 with that 114mph trap speed? Maybe maybe....

Timeslips attached.

I'm the right lane.

'79 244 with a cam only 5.3, T56, 8.8 with 3.73 gears.

The car could do much better, but unless I get down to MMP later this year I won't be running anymore. This was the last night Commerce was open. They're tearing it down for condos.
