Default Cam cap difference.

Anyone know if the cam caps are any different between the 530 and 531 heads? I picked up a 531 cheap, but it is missing caps. I know I'd have to have things line honed, but could I just buy can caps for any 8v head?

They should be.
The earlier heads had a different 5th cam cap and valve cover. As long as they’re the same valve cover, you’re good to go.

One local machine shop charges 150-200 to align bore the caps for a red block, which is a pretty good deal for the work that’s involved.

Ok that's good tk hear. I mean I got the head for like $100 and because it was that cheap I drove 4 hours to pick it up to inspect it. And other than missing the caps, it's just dirty and old/corroded and rusty. Nothing my friend shouldn't be able to clear up. Plus I'll have him align bore it, and maybe shave a little off the deck to make things true and raise the c/r a tad.

Ask in Wanted before robbing caps at the yard.
I had a set, not sure if I recycled them. I can look for a junk head, but I have been cleaning up.

I'll definitely do that. Especially because I'm here in CT and unfortunately there's almost never any redblocks at any of the pull it yourself yards. And most other yards don't keep them anymore either.

If that is a marine head. You'll want to have the shop take care of that number four exhaust port, too.

It is a marine head, and yeah that's definitely on the agenda for it.
