Hi Guys,

I did a search without any luck. I need to replace a glass lens on one of my pre-'86 ecode lights. I have a complete light with dim reflector and a bright reflector with a chipped lens. Anyone ever take these style ecodes apart? Thanks!

Tom

Just be careful with the white plastic clips. You need to push down and twist. Expect to break a little part off of it.

Pre 86 ones dont have those white clips, i remember seeing a lens on ebay awhile back, i dont remember what side. I think they will interchange.

Thanks for that. Not really worried about interchangeability, just worried about breaking the good lens trying to remove it.

Thanks for the detail! Do you know if there's a safe way to remove the good lens from the dim reflector?

It's not going to be easy because the glass has a lip on it that keeps you from getting the knife at the factory sealant.
It seems to be some pretty tough stuff much like the PL polyurethane caulk I used to repair that one.
Possibly some sort of thin hook tool, and or warming it in the oven.
The glass will crack if heated unevenly.
I'd start experimenting with the one with bad glass.

Thank you sir. Now I just have to decide if it's worth the risk-

Not sure if this is the way to go for these, since the glue is likely old and hard and the lenses are glass, but Jay has a coworker who gets the old fog lights off of trucks from work, and those also have non-removable lenses. He puts them in the over for a few minutes on a low heat to soften the glue, and then pops them open.

I had a pair with the same situation you are in. One with a good lens, and one with a bad reflector. A little heat from a heat gun and a bit of time and the lens peeled right off.

Thanks for all the replies guys. It looks like it's possible so now I just have to decide if I want to risk it. I have a set of ecodes in H1 and H4. The H1 reflectors are bright but one lens has a bb style hole and the other has a crack down low on the curve of the lens. The H4's have good lenses, but the reflectors have a little rust inside. Maybe I'll just sell both sets and run my 4 round light setup. You can still get good lights for that configuration, I'm just not a huge fan of how they look..

Ya, i would cut the glue out with a razor knife, use a blow dryer to heat it up, so it will seperate.

The glass is not glued to the housing, there is a rubber gasket and 8 metal clips that hold the glass on.

Or are we talking about these ones below?
