Default 240 wiper linkage issues

Iím having some issues with the wiper linkage in my 1976 242. I replaced the dash last summer, and I donít remember removing any brackets or bolts from the wiper linkage, but Iím wondering if something is missing. I took the wiper arms off for paint and when I tried to put them back on the linkage pushes down into the cowl. I ended up using an expandable snow brush and wedging it between the floor and the wiper links under the dash so I could get the arms back on. Is it just the tension from the wiper arms that hold the linkage up? Or is there some sort of bracket Iím missing that holds the linkage up tighter to the underside of the cowl?

Your car has the early wiper arms that are held on by a splined cylinder. If the cylinder comes off the shaft and stays in the wiper arm the shaft can come out of the wiper pivot.

Had one of mine fail while Christmas shopping years ago in the rain, the wiper drive cam came off the shaft. Went to a store and bought tools to take apart the dash, cable, etc fixed it in the parking lot. I took the wiper drive out after and drilled the shaft and bolted the drive cam back on, that was 32 years ago, they work fine still.

I was buying presents for my wife at the time. I only had to take the right side apart/glove box/ defroster vent etc. Was able to get the cam/wire back on the shaft, fixed both sides at my shop later.
