Saab 900 XS Dying after ignition

Hi - first post so I hope this is a reasonable question.
My Saab 900 (auto) is firing up OK, but then dying almost immediately unless I give it a lot of gas - even then it has been just dropping out.
Everything sounds reasonable, but there's a medium pitch 'whirring' when the gas goes on.
Any clues?

I think you want these forums. We're Volvo enthusiasts here. You know, the other Swedish musclecar, the ones with the engine mounted the proper direction.
