I've considered swapping an Ecotec from a Solstice/Sky into my Amazon - the major limitations besides the generally diminutive dimensions of the engine compartment and the transmission tunnel are the crossmember and the steering linkage. Anything that isn't rear sump probably won't fit because of crossmember interference, and there really isn't much volume to scallop out of the bottom of the crossmember to improve clearance. There isn't much (if any) leeway to move the engine forward in the bay due to the space that the steering stuff takes up and the location of the radiator.
Basically, anything that doesn't at least superficially resemble the Volvo pushrod motors is going to require you to get clever unless you're game to re-engineer the front suspension.
