Adam's Street 244 GL

Right, it's wednesday. Today was my last day at work before the holidays and a roadtrip, so it's time to relax and write the update while getting all the bits together for the trip home.

Update:

So i have gone to Adam's again, as i have been doing for the last 2 months every weekend haha... It was rather amusing really as we finally made it to the final bits of the swap. Also we kinda figured our why (there's a possibility) the big end started knocking...
IMG_20140504_150341_zps7586b7a1.jpg

IMG_20140504_150349_zps9b4157df.jpg

You could actually see the pulley actually wobbling about when the crank turns... Oh well... :)

The engine and box were swung in the car with a few pushes and moans, but it all went well afterwards
IMG_20140504_204017_zps13b2a148.jpg

Then Adam started his magic on the x-member for the gearbox:
The original 940 engine mount has been cut out the x-member, and massaged into the 240 one...

IMG_20140505_151000_zps87def0af.jpg

And finished product. Yeah!! Factory, i tells you!
IMG_20140505_155231_zps09b0fc8d.jpg

Good thing is that if need be i can replace it with the original 940 engine mount!

There also has been some fishing going on... As someone that replaced the intank pump has done an amazing job of losing the floaty bit from the sender, so i was unable to see the fuel level :D
IMG_20140505_160227_zps4ec78d23.jpg

We got a bite!!

Oh, no Sir MOT'man, it's standard, i tells you!

Things to be done today is to do the downpipe, plug the mocal cooler in, fit the headlight and do the fluids, and then, run it for a while to see the temps etc :)

Gonna go to Adam's tomorrow to see what's where and when, and i might even drive it home! We'll see! :)

Hello people!

So i have made it to Lithuania no problems. Had a chance to go onto my dads PC, so here i am.

The car behaves amazingly well. Drives good, and pulls hard! Would be interesting how much power it is making, as it is really noticable. It doesn't struggle to get up to speed, the way the previous engine did. And the best part is that it now does around 10mpg more!! I was really surprised when we calculated all. The previous engine only did around 21mpg, and this time we managed to get 32.1mpg on the motorway. Lovely! Also, Adam has done an amazing job on the downpipe and the rest of the engine and so on. Can't even tell you how happy i am about the way it all came out. He's a perfectionist and a really amazing person to be around. I will update this all whenever i have a chance with some pics etc.

That's it for now!

Adam

Hey all!

Here it is, the long awaited update...

So, where to start... The last two weeks were quite amusing and interesting for me and the car, so now i need to write it all the right way around...

As you already have read, the engine started knocking a while back, so the car was gone to Adam's place for the new engine, gearbox, turbo etc... It's been sat there for a couple of months until it was time to crack on with all the stuff...

Adam's been busy doing late nights for a really long time to make the car ready for the roadtrip back to Lithuania, and we made it just in time lol...

Thanx to John for the precise measurements for the prop and linkage to be the right size..

Also the recirc valve has been plugged for more chattery noises...

Now to the fun bit... As i already had the ticket for the ferry to leave UK friday night (09/05/2014), we didn't have alot of time to do stuff... And i was already living almost every weekend at Adam's to do stuff to the car as he's around 80 miles down the road from where i live and the 240 is my only car.

So thursday came, and we finally started the car for the first time in 2 months, just in time to do a little half hour test on the street for leaks etc, and off i went back home to pack up for the roadtrip that had to happen not later than 8pm that evening...

Here's the big wait at the ferry in Dover.. Waiting to go to Dunkirk...
20140510_005921_zps17e77b8e.jpg

On the way to the port, we had to stop for a 'bomb' check by the men with the white costumes, and i got complimented by one of them about the car being in an amazing condition.. They asked if i am off to a car show or something and if i restored the car etc... That made me chuckle like a little kid for the rest of the boat trip... :D

After we left the ferry, i drove another couple of hours until i met up with a friend of mine that i play World Of Tanks with, had some breakfast at his place, and headed for germany...

I was really surprised when we calculated the approximate mpg... the best i managed to squeeze from the previous engine was around 22mpg, while this one did an easy 32mpg, and the best so far was 35.8mpg!!! That was an amazing improvement, i think, due to the boost being a bit more, and the engine being in a better state...

This is somewhere in Poland already.. A little toilet break and off we go again...

On the way to Lithuania i have heard some strange noises, which were coming from the rear of the car... I thought that it might be a lost springy bit that hold the brake pads from knocking about, or something else... so, when i jacked the car up at my dads, we found this...

Another loose pin that was making noises... There you go, the tyre shop failed to tighten that up somehow...

To be continued...

After we have done the minor checkups on the car, we headed for the ferry in Dunkirk, France... On the way we decided to break!!

I was driving in Poland, and suddenly heard a weird klunking noise that suddenly appeared and disappeared the same way... It sounded as if you'd bounce your ratchet against an anti roll bar... hmm... that got me worried, so we pulled over to check it out... It stank of brake dust badly, but only on the rear right side wheel. It was waaay too hot to be normal, so i decided to jack the car up... When we took the wheel off i saw that the brake disc has actually changed color into graphite, and was almost untouchable... Ok, got some gloves, tried moving the it, and understood that there's something touching as it was really hard to move... Took the caliper off, still the same... Decided to take the disc off, and found this... :D

20140522_194005_zps1281db4d.jpg

Yeah, the brake pad material just broke off and was moving freely in the drum making whatever comes into it's mind lol... Sod it, throw all that stuff away and move on! No time to waste there!!!

Happy faces!!

Also as i mentioned before we paid a visit to a friend of mine in Belgium to have some food

And then off to the ferry!
20140523_205413_zps62751a99.jpg

All in all, that trip was absolutely mint! I've never cut anything so fine in my life lol... Started the car for the first time 2am friday night, and after not even 12 hours we were off to Lithuania... Then, after a good 4400 miles round trip i am safe and sound in the UK... The car works amazing. No leaks, no nonsense or any other noises, apart from the little bits that i know off, and will sort it out in the very near future... And it's way more economical that i ever thought it will be!

Huge thanx goes to Adam (340GLT) for all the hard work on the swap, John H for the measurements of the prop and gear linkage, Chesh, Max etc!! You are all amazing!!

To be continued whenever i have done anything, and there's still loads to do!!

Cheers for reading! Hopefully it was not boring (which it was lol...)

Adam

Cheers bud. Yeah, was a blast! Loved it to bits. I was thinking long about doing it, and decided that it has to be done as booking a flight etc is so easy, but you lose so much too... And now i have done it, and really do not regret a thing about it :)

Sweden would be one of my other goals to do one day. I wanna go Gatebil or even a roadtrip home through the Scandinavia etc... :)

Adam

hmm... Need a better quality video really... But there yo go.. Leaving my friends house

Yesterday i finally managed to go London to pick up some wheels. They are the rest of the set of TVR 16x7.5j wheels. The ones i had for more than a year are ET25, that will go on the rear, and these 4 are ET38, so they will go on the front. Will mount them up for a bit of eye candy and measurements to see what tyres i need to get, so should be interesting...
10447033_10154187198375321_6086959301460728430_n_zps26812a24.jpg

YaY!!

Had some free parking space at my friends place, so spent a bit of time playing with the wheels to see how they fit and what sizes would go where...

Here's the outcome:

ET25 on one side, 25mm adapter included aswell... looks really not that bad
DSC_0014_zpsff715779.jpg

ET38 on the other side... (same 25mm adapter)
DSC_0012_zps27a7997c.jpg

And an ET38 wheel on the front with the adapter...
DSC_0015_zpscc2bae3a.jpg

I really don't know what to do now... Do i keep the wheels, put some half decent tyres on them and lower the car so it doesn't look as 4x4 and drive it or flog the wheels, keep the adapters and look out for some bigger wheels (18's ideally), so it fills the arches better etc... I will need to get some better suspension for the wheels to be able to drive it harder without looking 4x4 and without rubbing the tyres too... well... we shall see!!

Adam

Hey all!!

So, had a bit of an issue today... While driving from work i saw a plume of smoke coming out of the exhaust... And the car suddenly started to struggle to idle badly, and almost cut out, so i kept it up with throttle, and got home... Tried starting the car after a half hour, and it struggled badly, started, but was still poking smoke and so on... The smoke is black and smells of unburnt fuel. Popped the OBD in, and it showed 2-3-1 and 2-3-2 codes, so the Lambda seems to be on the way out... In the beginning it showed another code - 1-1-3 - which means that there's loose connection or something similar, but after i reset and reconnected the lambda a couple of times it disappeared... Now if i had a spare Lambda to swap over, that would be great, but i don't want to buy it and find out it's all good and it is working...

Any ideas? :)

Ohh... and it seems to be leaking through the V-Band that was welded onto the turbo hot side... Smells bad and so on... Do not likey!! Will need to address it as soon as i can really...

Cheers, Adam

If my memory serves me right the lambda sensor has a feed of 12v and output of 0 to 1 volt.... you could try a multi meter on it perhaps

Hey guys!

Here's some updates!

Finally got myself a brand new Bosch Lambda sensor, swapped it in, and the car now runs properly again, and the MPG improved from the 14 i had with the buggered O2, back to normal, around 32 :D Winner!!
DSC_0071_zps695c8155.jpg

As you can see the v-band was blowing a bit lol...

Ohh... It's rubbing here... On the steering column. Still needs to be bolted in where the original exhaust mounts on the block, and the engine needs a third mount!!
DSC_0078_zpsc4811c10.jpg

Also, a friend of mine offered something i couldn't refuse!!
Quite rare Volk racing F-Zero winning wheels. 17*8 and 17*9 size... And as i am selling those TVR 16's, i will not lose any money and will have some left from the sale!! :D Winner!
10563468_10154360156985321_1971656313_n_zpsd32a5da8.jpg

Another good thing is that i have taken the GL shocks to GAZ shocks just outside London to be remade into Coilovers using 475lb springs and short struts including the Universal camber plates. Should be interesting as it will be amazing quality, knowing what stuff they do over there as a couple of my friends (including Chesh) have got. I can not wait to try them out!! Now i will also need to improve the rear shocks and springs, and anti roll bars, RCA's and Sphearical bearings for the rear axle off Ben... Oh... Anyways, the near future is gonna be interesting! Oh, and i also am going to go morevalve soon! :)

Cheers, Adam :)
