Chesh's 750R Project, and no the 5 is not a Typo

Ryan's HKS SSQV flange is (slightly...certainly not unusable!) warped after its welding...as is the pipe it's joined to. We're not having much luck in the UK with ally welding!

cheers

James

mint haven't spotted this project till now, looking awesome

could I ask where/how much it was to get your sump pan modified, its one of the things am gonna need done for my whiteblock RWD car, and thinking it pricey? :-(

I had the fellows at Ford cut mine and took it to a weld shop for about U$125. I still have light years to go on the project however. But the pan is done.

I I really wished that I'd just sent a pan to the states to be welded and then sent back.

I think the warning signals were there when the bloke wasnt really understanding what i wanted to do.

But we'll have to see how he goes about rectify the issue. I have a feeling he probably thought ahh well its being bolted up to a cork gasket or something that'll take up the warp.

Remembering back to how long it took me to find the place that did my 531, I can appreciate the frustration with the lack of places that'll do fabrication work in this country.

Damn you Americans and your reputable machine shops!!! :grrr:

At least you guys have the M90 and the Ecodes...

Anywho, what I found was important when doing this was I talked to the welder first and he told me that the cut was important. He would not cut the pan but to make sure that when it was cut that there was enough material that pushed the two halves to the outer edges of the bed plate (the bottom of the engine block) because when the pan is welded it will draw in a bit. I also gave the boys at the machine shop both the 6 cyl bed plate and the 5 cyl. The welder had the 5 cyl bed plate and bolted the pan pieces to it before welding. It worked out great and he was happy with the whole set up... completed the weld job in less than 2 hours. At least this was the amount of time that went by from when I dropped it off until the time he called me. No warps and just minimal clean up at the welded mating surface. Hope this helps some one along the way.

There would be no need to send a pan here. We have those. If you need one made let me know and I will get the guys over here to get done up. I think there is also someone on the board that does these for about U$350 or so. I maybe off on the price but if you do a search I am sure that you can find them.

When i've got the engine back out the car, i'll take some pics of the sump on the bottom of the block, and i'll let you see what you think of the warpage.

I gave him the 5 cylinder girdle to bolt it to whilst he welded it, as i thought that would be the best thing to use to keep the warping down.

this is what happens with light gauge ally being welded , it warps to buggery , not saying you cant warp steel etc , its quite normal for it to be warped .

as said above the two joins must be bang on to limit the amount of warping .

I was part of the formula student team 2yrs back, and we wanted a few things done, 1) a alu tubular chassis (jig already made),2) bodywork, in ANYTHING< gfibre, kevlar, carbokevlar, plastic, had to travel 220 miles each way to find a place that would do it. and where our team was is in the centre one of the most industrial place in britain (used to be)

Wow! was this bloke experienced with AL? I took mine to this guy who welds all kinds of things. I will get some picks up when I can. Since I have not installed it yet I can get pics of the the pan inside and out. This guy (Chris Razor) did a most excellent job.

The welds look smart...but it was impressively warped. I think either he didn't bolt it to the cradle...or...well I don't know, really. I'd have thought if it was bolted down, the worst you'd get would be horrible localised distortion.

cheers

James

I can't see that cradle warping. It's a huge lump of ally. I suspect it wasn't properly bolted down, or released too soon. Then again I'm no welder...

cheers

James

I cannot see how the bed plate would warp for the welding that is done. I am not sure what my welding guy used for welding but it must have been some type of helium TIG. Just guessing here because I was not there. Here are some more pics of my pan, some attached to the bed plate, which I am going to used to set up the engine in the engine bay. I cannot take my 940 down yet because the kid is driving it until he gets his car going.

As you can see, looks pretty straight. I am sure it is not prefectly flat and would leak without sealant but I am pretty sure that it is go to go as is.

Well after may false promises on the loan of an engine crane, I broke down and ordered one up today. So with any luck will be able to get the engine out and the project moving forwards again sometime soon, depending on how long it takes the courier to deliver.

So pics of the sump will be up soon.

I have my own crane (hoist, cherry picker) now for many years. I used to rent them when I did engine jobs but now they are fold away things and I saw a nice one here at the Tractor Supply for U$150. Well worth having if you are going to do any engine moving atall.

Are you going to run AC on your set up? I have not figure this one out on mine yet. I am too old not to have AC so I am keeping it. I am going to run (I hope) with the standard ignition. I am attempting to move the distibutor to the front of the engine. Still need to make a bracket to hold it. I see the <98 PS pumps will not work with the ME7 intakes so I am now in the hunt for >=99 pump. So I have better get back on this project cause time is getting short. I am sure that you will be on the road before I am there. I am looking forward to learning from your trials like the V6 front sway bar.

Peace out.

Err, I've got one, you could've asked.....
